asset's selling price exceeds its initial purchase price. A realized
capital gain is an investment that has been sold at a profit.
An
unrealized capital gain is an investment that hasn't been sold yet
but would result in a profit if sold. Capital gain is often used to
mean realized capital gain.
For most people, the capital gains tax rate
is currently 15% for an elapsed time between purchase and sale of
more than one year, and your normal tax rate for an elapsed time of
1 year or less.
Capital Gains can be for any asset, common assets
are stocks, bonds, or real estate.
